The Supply of University Enrollments: University Administrators as Utility Maximizing Bureaucrats
نویسندگان
چکیده
The supply of enrollments in higher education has received relatively little attention in both theoretical and empirical economic research. To address this, we formulate and test a model of the supply of enrollments in higher education in which administrators are modeled as utility maximizing bureaucrats. We find evidence that individual presidents and provosts have a significant effect on enrollment supply and faculty demand in a panel of eleven public colleges and universities in Maryland from 1988 to 1996, implying that institutions have enough market power to permit the preferences of administrators to influence enrollment supply and faculty demand. ∗Kathleen Carroll and participants in sessions at the 1998 Southern Economic Association meetings and the 1999 Public Choice meetings provided helpful comments and suggestions. All remaining errors are our own. We thank Nicole Myers and Ryan Mutter for able research assistance.

A Game Theoretical Approach to Optimize Policies of Government Under the Cartel of Two Green and Non-green Supply Chains
In this research, firms aim at maximizing two purposes of social welfare (environment) and profitability in the supply chain system. It is assumed that there are two supply chains, a green and an ordinary, each consists of a manufacturer and a supplier; in which the manufacturer generates profit through franchises. The green and the ordinary manufacturers form a cartel on the market of a certai...
متن کاملMODELING RISK OF LOSING A CUSTOMER IN A TWO-ECHELON SUPPLY CHAIN FACING AN INTEGRATED COMPETITOR: A GAME THEORY APPROACH
In a competitive market, customer decision is made to maximize his utility. It can be assumed that risk of losing a supply chain’s customer can be defined based on products utility from customer point of view. This paper takes account of product price and service level as competition criteria. The proposed model is based on non-cooperative game theory, for one-manufacturer and one-retailer supp...
متن کاملBi-objective Build-to-order Supply Chain Problem with Customer Utility
Taking into account competitive markets, manufacturers attend more customer’s personalization. Accordingly, build-to-order systems have been given more attention in recent years. In these systems, the customer is a very important asset for us and has been paid less attention in the previous studies. This paper introduces a new build-to-order problem in the supply chain. This study focuses on bo...
متن کاملA New Fairness Index and Novel Approach for QoS-Aware Resource Allocation in LTE Networks Based on Utility Functions
Resource allocation techniques have recently appeared as a widely recognized feature in LTE networks. Most of existing approaches in resource allocation focus on maximizing network’s utility functions. The great potential of utility function in improving resource allocation and enhancing fairness and mean opinion score (MOS) indexes has attracted large efforts over the last few years. In this p...
متن کاملDynamic Competitive Supply Chain Network Design with Price Dependent Demand and Huff Utility Function
This paper develops a two-stage model to consider a franchise/franchisee environment in which supply chains are simultaneously entering the untapped market to produce either identical or highly substitutable products and give franchise to franchisees. Customer demand is elastic, price dependent and customer utility function is based on Huff gravity rule model. The supply chains, in the first st...
